GS1 encoding notes

  • GS1-128 is Code 128 with a leading FNC1 character marking the data as GS1 element strings.
  • GS1 DataMatrix adds the same FNC1 marker in a compact 2D square.
  • Fixed-length AIs need no separator; variable-length AIs use FNC1 when another AI follows.
  • Dates use YYMMDD format. A day value of 00 means the last day of the month.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GS1 Application Identifier?
An Application Identifier (AI) is a two- to four-digit prefix that defines what the following data means — for example (01) for GTIN, (10) for batch/lot, (17) for expiry date and (00) for SSCC.
Does this tool issue official GTINs or SSCCs?
No. This tool encodes identifiers you already own into a scannable GS1 barcode. Official GS1 company prefixes, GTINs and SSCC ranges are assigned by GS1 member organisations.
Should I use GS1-128 or GS1 DataMatrix?
GS1-128 is a linear barcode ideal for pallets, cases and shipping labels. GS1 DataMatrix is a compact 2D code used for small items, healthcare devices and direct part marking.
