Encoding happens entirely in your browser. This tool encodes numbers you already own — it does not issue or register GS1 company prefixes.

Data rules

7 data digits + 1 check digit

  • Length: 7–8 characters
  • Character set: digits only
  • Check digit: required
  • Quiet zone: 7 modules

Printing notes

  • EAN-8 is allocated separately from EAN-13 and is reserved for products where a full EAN-13 will not fit.
  • The same modulo-10 check digit algorithm applies, over 7 data digits.

What is EAN-8?

EAN-8 is the short retail symbol for packs too small to carry EAN-13. It encodes a GTIN-8, which GS1 issues separately rather than deriving it from your existing GTIN-13.

Because GTIN-8 capacity is limited, GS1 member organisations only issue them where the packaging genuinely cannot fit a larger symbol.

Frequently asked questions

Is this EAN-8 generator free to use?

Yes. The EAN-8 generator is free, has no signup and adds no watermark. The symbol is encoded in your browser, so the data you type is never uploaded to a server.

What file format should I download for printing EAN-8?

Download SVG for anything that will be printed. SVG is vector, so bar widths and the quiet zone stay exact at any size. PNG is fine for screens and slide decks, but never scale a PNG barcode up — enlarging it blurs the bar edges and scanners start failing.

Can I shorten my EAN-13 into an EAN-8?

No. A GTIN-8 is a separate number issued by GS1 on request; it is not a compression of your GTIN-13.
