What is Aztec Code?

Aztec Code is a 2D matrix symbology built outward from a bullseye finder in the centre. It needs no quiet zone, so it fits into tighter layouts than Data Matrix or QR.

It is the standard for rail and air travel tickets, where it must scan reliably from a phone screen at a gate reader.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Aztec Code generator free to use?

Yes. The Aztec Code generator is free, has no signup and adds no watermark. The symbol is encoded in your browser, so the data you type is never uploaded to a server.

What file format should I download for printing Aztec Code?

Download SVG for anything that will be printed. SVG is vector, so bar widths and the quiet zone stay exact at any size. PNG is fine for screens and slide decks, but never scale a PNG barcode up — enlarging it blurs the bar edges and scanners start failing.

Why does Aztec Code not need a quiet zone?

Its central bullseye finder pattern lets the decoder locate the symbol from the inside out, so surrounding whitespace is not required to isolate it.
