Encoding happens entirely in your browser. This tool encodes numbers you already own — it does not issue or register GS1 company prefixes.

Data rules

13 data digits + 1 check digit

  • Length: 13–14 characters
  • Character set: digits only
  • Check digit: required
  • Quiet zone: 10 modules

Printing notes

  • The leading digit is the packaging indicator: 1–8 for fixed-measure trade item levels, 9 for variable measure.
  • ITF-14 is printed with heavy bearer bars because it is normally printed directly onto corrugated board.
  • The remaining 13 digits are the GTIN of the item inside the carton.

What is ITF-14?

ITF-14 encodes a GTIN-14 — the number that identifies a trade item at case or carton level rather than a single consumer unit. The first digit is the indicator, which distinguishes packaging levels such as an inner pack from a full case.

It is printed with a thick bearer bar frame. That frame is functional: it stops a scanner reading a partial symbol when a corrugated surface prints unevenly.

Frequently asked questions

Is this ITF-14 generator free to use?

Yes. The ITF-14 generator is free, has no signup and adds no watermark. The symbol is encoded in your browser, so the data you type is never uploaded to a server.

What file format should I download for printing ITF-14?

Download SVG for anything that will be printed. SVG is vector, so bar widths and the quiet zone stay exact at any size. PNG is fine for screens and slide decks, but never scale a PNG barcode up — enlarging it blurs the bar edges and scanners start failing.

What is the indicator digit in a GTIN-14?

The leading digit signals the packaging level — commonly 1 to 8 for defined case configurations and 9 for variable measure items. It changes the GTIN, so each packaging level needs its own barcode.

Do I need the bearer bars around an ITF-14?

Yes for direct printing on corrugated. The frame prevents partial scans caused by ink spread and misfeeds, and it is required by the GS1 specification for that application.
